Camp Summer 2019 2(web)

Camping & Recreation

The League's Camping & Recreation Program was created to meet the needs of children and adults with physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities in 1927. Our Camping & Recreation Program has year-round traditional, weekend, and travel sessions for all individuals with disabilities. We offer a variety of outdoor recreational services including camping. As one of the oldest residential camps in America designed specifically for people with special needs, Camp Greentop is accredited by the American Camp Association and is licensed by the State of Maryland for Youth Camp Certification. Campers experience joy as they encounter life-changing experiences, build meaningful relationships with other participants, staff, and volunteers. Family members and participants get to create lasting memories throughout the DMV region and beyond! Together, we are able to create a judgment-free recreational environment that is physically, socially, and intellectually enriching for all individuals with disabilities.

The League's Camping Trip Programs

Facility Descriptions

The League uses various facilities to accommodate our year-round camping and recreation programming for children and adults with disabilities. We are fortunate to have a great relationship with Catoctin Mountain Park where Camp Greentop has been hosted during the summer months since 1937. Camp Round Meadow, located just around the corner from Camp Greentop, is used during the rest of the year for our weekend respite programming. YMCA Camp Letts provides a great location for our week-long Winter Camp session every winter.

Camp Greentop is located on 200 beautiful acres in Catoctin Mountain National Park. It is six miles west of Thurmont, Maryland and is maintained by the Department of Camping & Recreation at The League for People with Disabilities in Baltimore, Maryland. Together, The League collaborates with the National Park Service to ensure Camp Greentop is ready for our respites for people with disabilities.

Built in 1937 as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal legislation, Camp Greentop was one of the first camps specially-designed for people with disabilities. Camp Greentop boasts a rich history. Its accessible trails allow campers to seamlessly journey from the original, historic cabins to the camping and recreation program areas. The camping site has a spacious dining hall, a recreation hall, twelve cabins with comfort stations, a wheelchair accessible swimming pool, a main office, nature and crafts huts, and a large sports field known as Greentop.”

Each cabin sleeps ten people. Cabins contain a permit wheelchair, an electronic charging station, and built-in beds. Our cabins are unique as we offer campers one comfort station in each cabin. Comfort stations have several toilets, community showers, and personal hygiene items

The League’s Pioneer Program takes place at Walnut Springs, a campsite located just ½ mile from Camp Greentop’s main site. Walnut Springs has a large clearing for setting up tents, a campfire circle, a portable toilet station, and a pavilion with several picnic tables. Walnut Springs offers several fun and challenging hiking trails leading from the campsite. Here, due to the absence of running water, campers must journey to the main site daily to wash up.

Address: 14840 Manahan Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780

Camp Round Meadow is in Thurmont, Maryland. The site is a four-season dormitory camp with a gymnasium, dining hall, and classrooms. Each dormitory includes thirty twin beds, two bathrooms with flushable toilets, sinks, and hot water for showers. Join Camp Round Meadow during any season for fun camping and recreation activities made specifically for individuals with disabilities!
